It is not difficult to eliminate 100 grams from a standard frame. We have done it many times over the years. But if we have to take 100 grams off a frame that weighs less than 800 grams, the going gets tough, if not impossible. We are talking about almost 15% of the total weight. It has been possible only by exploiting two dedicated years of research, testing and road-trials. A new carbon fibre called DIALED™, produced by Mitsubishi Japan and blended with a new production process has finally allowed us to reach this target weight. But the biggest challenge has been to combine this lightness with the extreme manoeuvrability and exceptional handling that has made our products famous the world over. This then not only involved research into reducing the weight, but also into our production process and the finest constructional details of the frame. The Zero.6 comes with a unique matt black finishing, polished decals and silver highlighting.

The key to the Exploro’s speed is the aero downtube that is wide enough to catch the airflow coming off the big front tire (a skinny downtube wouldn’t even touch the airflow). But at 50mm wide, we cannot use a full airfoil shape as the tube would be 150-200mm deep, causing too much surface drag. So we square off the tail, keeping most of the aero performance with a 50x75mm cross section that is also close to perfect for strength and stiffness; our Sqaero shape. The wide downtube also effectively shields the water bottles.

Using high modulus carbon fiber enables Look to build lightweight frames while maintaining optimum stiffness: sufficient for the frame to combine excellent efficiency with comfort. The arrival of carbon in the MTB world gives new impetus to the use of rigid or semi-rigid frames since the weight savings are considerable.

The frame is of one-piece construction for greater strength and lightness. A ‘gusset’ is built into the one-piece mould under the head tube in order to enhance frame strength. This ‘gusset’ also provides fork clearance compatible with most new forks.
