We wanted to celebrate America's birthday with a special bike this year and also pay tribute to one of our favorite American bicycles. The GT Superbike 2 Project 96 was one of our all-time dream machines and something that most cycling fanboys will lust over. Even standing still, that iconic all American paint scheme and Mavic wheel set screams speed demon!
We worked with our local builder, Cryptic Cycles here in Mission Viejo, CA to replicate this one of a kind beauty. Cryptic Cycles custom fabricates his own tubes with the same carbon fiber from SCUD missiles to build incredibly strong, stiff, and lightweight custom bicycles. This carbon fiber is unlike any other and truly one of the most futuristic materials that you can get a hold of. Because the tensile strength is so high in the boron fiber, innegra, and Kevlar combination, each tube is able to be created paper thin to minimize weight, but maximize comfort to give a soft and supple ride. The product, an ultra-fast climbing bike with the comfort for century type riding.
To stay with the all-American theme, we built the bike the all-new SRAM Red eTap AXS 12-speed wireless gruppo. Only 6 of the pieces were SRAM including the shifters, front derailleur, rear derailleur, cassette, chain, and crankset. As for the brakes, we installed Cane Creek eeBrakes El Diablo model. We used the Enduro Ceramic bearings in both the bottom bracket and hubs. The cockpit was all Enve Composites from the handlebar, stem, seat-post, and bottle cage. We decided to go with the Specialized S-Works Toupe because it was 117g and one of the better-looking saddles in our selection. For the handlebar tape, we were able to get our friend over at Red Monkey Sports to drop off all the colors they had so we can settle on the best choice as far as getting the right match. Rounding off the all-American, we went with the Aerolite aluminum pedals and White Industry hubs.
We really love the way the Mavic Cosmic Carbone scream the yellow from the GT Superbike 2 Project 96 and so we were able to get a hold of some classic Cosmic Carbone rims. They were specially built with White Industries hubs to use a 16h and 20h which helped us minimize the bikes weight. White Industries was kind enough to install the Enduro Ceramic bearings for us and these turned out to be some of the fastest rolling wheelsets we have ever built. We wrapped the hoops just like the Project 96 with Continental tires to maintain the iconic look.
All and all, we were super happy with the results. The bike is amazing to ride and is a real stunner to look at. Going to be a great fourth rolling around on this bike. If you have any questions on this bike or any of the products that we used for the build. Please feel free to contact us a www.twohubs.com or call us at 877.480.2453. Thanks for visiting and always remember to enjoy the ride!
